Sharp Write Ups Of A Unique Selection Of Movies From Around The World

Stand and Deliver: Olmos gives a powerful performance in this momentous drama as a hard, requesting professor who empowers his East L.A. barrio students to pass an Advanced Placement Calculus Quiz. That's only the beginning of this tale that is based on a true story. Cast includes Edward James Olmos, Lou Diamond Phillips, Andy Garcia, Can Gotay, and Ingrid Oliu. (105 minutes, 1987)

Illicit: Self sufficient-minded Stanwyck cherishes Rennie, although doesn't desire matrimony to tarnish her cheerfulness. This is a boring film with way too much talking. Cast includes Barbara Stanwyck, James Rennie, Ricardo Cortez, Joan Blondell, and Charles Butterworth. (81 minutes, 1931)

The House of Yes: On a stormy day in 1983, a youthful gentleman brings his fiance home to meet his broken Washington, D.C, family, containing his demented twin sis, Jackie-O, whose fantasies in Jacqueline Kennedy have lengthened to the point of reenacting the JFK assassination-with live bullets. A well made black comedy, based on the stage production by Wendy MacLeod. Cast includes Parker Posey, Josh Harnilton, Tori Spelling, Freddie Prinze, Jr., Genevieve Bujold, and Rachael Leigh Cook. (90 minutes, 1997)

Gorgo: This film is an excellent sci-fi tale of a captured ocean beast put on display in London, and the massive parent, who is coming to the rescue. The film has excellent visual effects. Cast includes Bill Travers, William Sylvester, Vincent Fall, Bruce Seton, and Joseph O?Connor. (78 minutes, 1961)

Lost Boundaries: This is a penetrating, well-meaning but slow paced account of a committed, light skinned Negro physician (Ferrer, in his debut) who (with his family) passes for white in a tiny New Hampshire town. Cast includes Beatrice Pearson, Mel Ferrer, Richard Hylton, Susan Douglas, Canada Lee, Rev. Robert Dunn, and Carleton Carpenter. (99 minutes, 1949)

Big Shots: So-so adolescent venture in reference to an ignorant white boy and streetwise city black that come together and find themselves hired as hit men. Cast includes Ricky Busker, Darius McCrary, Robert Delight, Robert Prosky, Jerzy Skolimowski, and Paul Winfield. (90 minutes, 1987)

The Little Shop of Horrors: This is a classic black comedy in reference to youthful schnook who creates bloodthirsty plant and is made to kill in request to fuel it with human blood. Originally notorious as the film was shot In 2 days, however now thought to be one of Corman's best films. Nicholson has comical part as masochist who flourishes on dental suffering; Cast includes Jonathan Cloud, Jackie Joseph, Mel Welles, Dick Miller, Myrtle Vail, and Jack Nicholson. (70 minutes, 1960)

Mr. Nanny: A lame brained comedy characterizing Hogan as a fighter employed to look after a set of ruined, disregarded rich kids (whom nut ball Johansen is plotting to abduct). Cast includes Terry "Hulk" Hogan (Bollea), Sherman Hemsley, Austin Pendleton, Robert Gorman, Madeline Zima, and David Johansen. (84 minutes, 1984)

Slaughter in San Francisco: Prior cop Wong desires retribution on killer of his companion. Norris, in an aiding role, is the poor guy. Cast includes Don Wong, Ditch Norris, Sylvia Channing, Robert Jones, and Dan Ivan. (87 minutes, 1981)
