Nippert Helps Rangers to Victory

Dustin Nippert his justification for maintaining the No. 5 slot in the Texas Rangers' starting rotation in Texas' five-two victory against Toronto in the 1st game of Tuesday's doubleheader. Next up, Brandon McCarthy, coming back for his 1st start because departing the pitching rotation in June for the inactive list.

Nippert had much superior control than in his prior appearance last week at Yankee Stadium. In the Bronx, he let up 11 base runners (four hits, 7 BBs) and only forced 11 outs. On Tuesday afternoon, he got out of trouble to secure his fifth victory of the year and 3rd as a starter. Nippert was responsible for 5 hits, and walked just one. He reduced his earned run average as a starter to 4.43 and overall to 3.91. It was his third fruitful game in his prior 5 games.

Nippert said there really was not much discrepancy concerning how he pitched last week and on Tuesday: "Truly able to pitch good pitches. In New York, I think I pitched one curve successfully. The bigger predicament I dug myself in, I tried harder to get beyond it. I was simply going the wrong way. I continued walking men, trying to throw that spot on pitch.

"Yesterday, I was able to throw it in front in the count, late in the count. Keep the batters off my fastball."

Claimed boss Ron Washington: "I do not believe he was overthrowing. He was balancing with his change-up and his breaking stuff. Elevated his fastball."

Washington and Nippert mutually indicated Nippert wasn't throwing to guard his position in the pitching rotation. Furthermore Nippert insisted he will gladly start or come in from the bullpen. Seeing that the Rangers are in post-season pursuit, each teammate's function increases in importance.

"I only want to assist this franchise," he insisted. "It's pleasant for us that we have further arms presently. Whoever's effective you can go with.
